8 by 8: Tackle the Effective Teaching Practices and SMPs like an MVP (Summer 2017)
The eight Effective Teaching Practices (ETPs) put forth by NCTM in Principles to Actions (2014) are high-leverage research based practices that can and should be implemented in every mathematics classroom. When teachers incorporate and work to improve their ability to enact these practices students have increased opportunities for learning and are more likely to engage in the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs). (CCSS, 2010) This course will focus on the ETPs, helping participants to better understand what they are and how to enact them in their classrooms. During this two day course we will engage in rich mathematical tasks that will allow for connections to be drawn between the 8 ETPs and the 8 SMPs as well as provide a framework, which can be used to guide mathematics instructors to teach like MVPs.
